Saturday we drove across the Causeway onto Antelope Island.
After visiting the welcome center we decided we wanted to at least "attempt" to climb
to the highest point on Antelope Island which is Frary Peak.
Probably not the best idea for our first hike with 2 young boys but they were determined. With our camelpaks and some snacks we headed on our way.
The trail gains 2050 feet in 3.5 miles.
See the tallest part on this picture? That's where we were, well VERY close to it.
The hike wasn't too bad at first, pretty similar hiking to what we had done before. We did notice that the higher we got the cooler it got but it was still hot!
About 1.5 miles in we noticed Jayden's camelpak seemed very light, too
light. He had drank through his whole bag already. Oh no! Thankfully
mine was still full and with rationing we did ok.
We spotted a bison far off but it was too far away to get a picture with our camera.
We found out from other hikers that it had been right on the trail earlier that morning forcing them to go around it!
The boys were very impressed with the skeleton we found and had to have a picture but
neither one of them would hold it, so I got to be the lucky one!
Joel liked this little resting spot in the shade. I would say this was about the only
shaded part of the whole hike
Airing out...when you stood on the edge of the cliff you could feel a nice strong cool breeze,
it was much needed after the couple hours we had been hiking at this point.
It was definitely getting more rocky and steep.
Finally we reached the top. We didn't go up the last 100 feet or so because we had missed
the trail and the way we would have had to go from that point would have been way to rocky and dangerous with the boys. It was very narrow with steep ravines on both sides.
The boys posing near the top. They were pretty tired but they did SO well!
Joel was so upset we weren't going all the way to the top. He begged us to keep going but after
talking to some other much more advanced hikers we knew we had gone as far as we could.
John and Jayden made it back to the car before Joel and I because Joel and I went off course a little
to see if we could get a closer look at the bison which was long gone.
Jayden's just a little exhausted after a nearly 4 hour hike.
Joel and I are finally done too.
We look like terrible parents by the way they look in these pictures!
After getting off the island the first thing we did was go to a gas station and get
gi-normous drinks!
And as you can see the boys weren't near as tired as they looked in the pictures above. As soon as they got those drinks they were completely back to normal!
