The first priority for the boys the next morning was to go to the Ranger office to turn in the packets they had worked hard on in order to get their Jr Ranger badges. So we now have two Official Jr Rangers!
Hiking up to the Grand Canyon of YS
It was quite a hike down to get to it but when we got down there it was completely worth it!! You could see the Grand Canyon to the left and then to the right was a stunning river and you stood right where the falls overflow down below to the canyon. Also in a distance on your way back up you can see another falls. It was breathtaking. I think we stood here the longest and just couldn't even take in all the beauty.
The ranger talk the evening before had been about making sure you take the time to stop and be quiet and get alone. This way you could hopefully have a "Yellowstone Moment".
I think Joel is having his Yellowstone Moment.
When we were driving to the Sulphur Caldron & Mud Volcano we noticed this huge herd of buffalo.
They were everywhere and they weren't afraid!
Mud Volcano and Dragon's tongue
When we got there you could see buffalo were there too! The tourist's weren't staying the 20 yards away like they were supposed to and some of the buffalo were getting pretty aggravated about it.
Our first view of Yellowstone Lake which you drive along for quite a while while going south in YS
This was the day of wildlife for us. Here is Mama making sure the way is clear...
for baby.
Can you spot what we see next?
Our last stop was West Thumb Geyser Basin which if I remember correctly are some of the most colorful geysers at Yellowstone. I think the picture below shows that pretty well.
It was kind of cloudy and overcast or else I think the colors would have been a lot more vibrant.
Since we didn't get a picture by the sign on our way in we had to get one on our way out. John thinks he is pretty witty just sticking his head in the picture! haha
At least the view didn't stop when we left YS as we had the privilege to drive right through Grand Teton next.
Our GPS took us home on the scenic route while John was sleeping, so I drove through a LOT of green with livestock. I didn't notice the sign that said "No Gas" for 50 miles. It was VERY close. We pulled in to the gas station sighing with relief and high fiving each other then realized as John tried to pump the gas that they had NO electric!! So we had to drive on a little farther and LUCKILY we made it. Man oh man that was a little nerve racking.
We headed into a little rain storm but this was at the end.
